This plan is part two of Local Actions: The City of Saskatoon’s Adaptation Strategy. It sets out how the City of Saskatoon will prepare for climate impacts through its corporate processes and highlights four focus areas: decisions, staff, services, and assets. From Flooding to Fire: How the Town of Canmore is preparing for climate change
This case study highlights the Town of Canmore and their Climate Resilience Action Plan. They used the Climate Resilience Express tool to help identify key risks and vulnerabilities as well as to prioritize actions. Completion of their adaptation plan has led to a number of actions, including a flood risk assessment of the Bow River and incorporation of adaptation priorities into budget planning. This case study presents the process used by Canmore to create its action plan and highlights key insights for other communities.
Local Climate Change Adaptation Planning in Manitoba
This report focuses on municipalities in the Province of Manitoba and assesses the extent to which they are incorporating climate change adaptation into their planning. From a sample of local planning documents, the report identifies five development plans, zero emergency plans and two integrated watershed management plans that consider climate change adaptation. It recommends ways the Province of Manitoba can support enhanced adaptation planning at the municipal level.

This guide is a tool to support public agencies to begin identifying and implementing climate change adaptation strategies. It outlines a methodology to help you facilitate a team toward identifying tangible adaptation initiatives and securing necessary ownership and approvals. The methodology centres on a single half-day workshop that provides steps to plan, conduct and evaluate a workshop for your department or program.
Making Strides on Community Adaptation in Canada
The Making Strides on Community Adaptation project shares recommendations on how to better leverage implementation exposes readers to target resources and tools that can be used to help support the implementation of adaptation actions and presents the broad findings of the project. The project’s purpose was to increase the uptake of existing implementation-related resources such as decision-making tools or geographically specific guidance.

The City of Red Deer Climate Change Adaptation Plan was initiated primarily with an emphasis on corporate action and preparedness around the impacts of climate change. It is part of the implementation of priority actions from the Environmental Master Plan.

With support from the Rockefeller Foundation, Arup developed the City Resilience Index—a new way to understand and champion resilience in cities. The City Resilience Index highlights areas of improvement, identifies weaknesses and concentrates minds toward finding innovative ways to mitigate risk.
PRAC Municipal Adaptive Planning (MAP) Study
This report was developed to assist municipalities in adaptation. It outlines a six-step process to help users assemble a Municipal Adaptation Planning team to identify and analyze climate change risks, formulate adaptation or mitigation plans, and communicate the findings of their analysis to stakeholder groups and the general public prior to embarking upon the preparation and implementation of mitigation plans.
Municipal Climate Change Action Plan Guidebook
This guide is part of a project by the Canada-Nova Scotia Infrastructure Secretariat to assist municipalities in the preparation of Municipal Climate Change Action Plans as required under the Canada-Nova Scotia Agreement on the Transfer of Federal Gas Tax Revenues. It provides a six-step planning framework for climate change adaptation priorities and three steps to creating a corporate mitigation plan for greenhouse gas emissions.

Accelerating Adaptation in Canadian Communites
Funded by Natural Resources Canada, Accelerating Adaptation in Canadian Communities is a series of nine case studies. This report provides a review to update understanding of the current state of climate change adaptation in Ontario municipalities. It describes the experiences of municipalities that have begun adaptation actions and aims to motivate more municipalities to undertake actions through informative case studies.
Climate Change Adaptation Planning: A Handbook for Small Canadian Municipalities
This handbook, guides the preparation and implementation of a climate change adaptation plan to enable communities to deal with the impacts, risks and opportunities posed by a changing climate. The six-step process includes public engagement, risk assessment, policy-making and monitoring.
Adapting to Climate Change: An Introduction for Canadian Municipalities
This book is an update of a document published by the Canadian Climate Impacts and Adaptation Research Network. It provides municipal decision makers with information to help them understand the need for climate change adaptation and how to put adaptation measures in place. It refers to other guides that can help identify and address risks and opportunities and to case studies from municipalities of varying sizes that are taking adaptation action.
City of Edmonton Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment for the Quesnell Bridge
The Quesnell Bridge in Edmonton was selected as a case study in the roads and associated structures category of the First National Engineering Vulnerability Assessment. The assessment uses the PIEVC Protocol for Climate Change Infrastructure Vulnerability Assessment and various information sources from the City of Edmonton personnel, historical weather events and climate-model projections.
Canadian Communities' Guidebook for Adaptation to Climate Change
This guidebook introduces users to a decision-making process that combines sustainable development, adaptation and mitigation. It includes Canadian case studies, examples of potential adaptation actions and an appendix on various analytical methods used in the adaptation decision-making process.
